INTRODUCTION

uparr.jpg (927 bytes)

It has been a long felt need of Construction Industry to apply some protective coating on construction steels to protect against the corrosion of weather conditions, industrial chemicals & gases. Recently an Epoxy-based two-component Compound has been sighted in the market but viewing some of its drawbacks, we are doubtful about its successful utility and acceptance over prolonged period.

To over- come the drawbacks of the Two-component Epoxy system, we have now developed a Single-component Co-polymer Coating system which can promisingly attract the Construction Industry in respect of the simple way of surface preparation, superior bonding strength with concrete and steel promising anti- corrosion properties, lower coating cost and absolute ease of application.

Our Coating Compound, TORRCOTE ASP, has been tested and authenticated by the Indian Concrete Institute, Roorkee.

PROPERTIES & FEATURES

uparr.jpg (927 bytes)

The use of our Compound, TORRCOTE ASP The Rust guard does not require the clumsy, time consuming and expensive method of cleaning the rusted torsteel bar surface. For application of the Epoxy t_bar_site_1.jpg (11110 bytes)coating, the rusted torsteel bars have to be first passed through a Hydrochloric Acid bath to dissolve the rust scales, then through a plain water bath for rinsing the acid and finally the derusted and rinsed bars have to be heated over 100 degC before the actual application of coating. For application of TORRCOTE ASP The Rust guard, a manual cleaning by scraping out the loose rust scales with steel- wire brushes or by passing the rusted bars through the centres of a mechanically revolving multisteel-brushes device is enough to get rid of the rust scales off the bar surface.

Our Primer as well as the Coating Compound are SINGLE-PACK, ready-to-use Products which do not require the addition of a Hardener/Catalyst at the time of use, as it is necessary in the case of Epoxy system of coating. Our system constitutes the application of first coat of our colourless Primer followed by two coats of the Coating Com- pound, either in Green or Yellow colour, as may be selected by the user. In view of the simple surface cleaning and easy method of coating, we can directly supply our Coating materials to the actual users who can easily carry out the coating work on bars at their own site, either by Immersion Method or by simple Manual Application. This will make a large saving in terms of Cost & Time of the users, which they otherwise spend through transport of bars to the places of the Epoxy coating centres.

The components of our Coating Compound as well as of the Primer chemically react and set into Co-polymer plastic laminates over the cleaned metal surface after application. Even after the coating is dried up after 24 h0urs of’ application, the residual polymerisatit_bar_site_2.jpg (13835 bytes)on still continues further in the dry plastic laminate which gives a mighty strong bonding with the metal surface of torsteel & plain bars.

TORRPRIM ASP The Rust guard, the Primer, has a sharp penetrative power in porous substrates. On application, it gets absorbed into the fine pores of the well-stuck porous rust scales still left out over the bars during cleaning. The absorbed Primer develops fine fibres/ tentacles of Co.polymer plastic within the rust pores which strongly bond and consolidate the rust scales with the proper bar surface.

VERY IMPORTANT POINTS

uparr.jpg (927 bytes)

The Primer and the Coating Compound, both possess excellent bonding capacity with the concrete besides steel. The final Co.polymer plastic material of the coating has a conspicuous fibro-elastic property and the coating surface has a fine roughage.

These specific properties of our Co.polymer Coating attribute to give an increased bond strength between the coated bar surface & concrete as compared against the bond strength of bare concrete with the direct metal surface. The coating, if properly appliedBridge2.jpg (13995 bytes), leaves no portholes to permit the moisture & gases to reach to the lower metal surface.

The Co-polymer plastic of the coating material has an excellent resistance against the corrosion caused by ordinary & saline weather conditions as well as against the corrosive effects of chemicals & gases. These remarkable features of the coating material prevent the torsteel & plain bars in the structures against corrosion that consequently prevent the concrete structures & columns from cracking caused through the pressure exerted by increase in volume & weight of the bar metal by oxidation.

METHOD OF APPLICATION SURFACE PREPARATION

uparr.jpg (927 bytes)

The rusted torsteel bars and the plain bars can be cleaned manually by merely scraping with steel-wire burshes or scrapers to get rid of the loose rust scales and superficial rust films off the rusted bar surface. However, for cleaning large quantities of rusted bars, the bars are passed through the centres of a mechanically revolving device consisting of three or more steel-wire brushes to get rid of the oxide scales & films off the bar surface. Strongly stuck rust scales left over the bar surface even after cleaning create no problem in the application of coatings of our Product. The application is made by eit_bar_site_3.jpg (14598 bytes)ther of the following two methods.

1. IMMERSION APPLICATION: Immerse the clean and dry torrsteel/plain bars into a hemi-cylindrical channel or shallow pan through containing the well mixed Primer, TORRPRIM ASP. Keep the bars immersed just for ONE minute into the Primer. Lift the bars a while to allow to drain down the excess Primer. Allow these Primer- coated bars to dry for about 6 to 8 hours in open air at room-temperature. Then give TWO coatings, each at a drying interval of 6 to 8 hours, of the actual Coating Compound, TORRCOTE ASP, over the dry Primer-coated bars by this very Immersion method. Note: Even though dislocation of the green Pigment takes place in the final coating during draining after immersion, the coating of the entire bar surface is complete.

2. MANUAL APPLICATION: The coating of the Primer as well as of TORRCOTE ASP The Rust guard can also be given over the cleaned dry bars manually by brush applications, if so desired by the user. bars.jpg (25632 bytes)

Notes:
(i) After 24 hours of drying, the coating becomes hard and the bars become transportable.

(ii) The residual reaction of polymerisation through cross-linkages still continues even in the dried coatings for about six days until the total polymerisation is complete.

(iii) The container channels, troughs as well as the brushes should be cleaned with our Thinner or with the commercial quality, Xylene available in the chemical markets. Our thinner will be supplied to the users as per their need.

CAUTION !!!
Since the Primer & the Coating Compound are solvent-based, it is imperatively advised that the coating operations should not be conducted in non-ventilated or poorly venti- lated locations to avoid suffocation to the workmen.
